The flight itself is half of it. You go up the deepest gorge in the world with Dhaulagiri on one side and Annapurna on the other, and the pilot took a wide turn so both sides got the view. Muktinath was cold and windy and very peaceful early in the morning before the later groups arrive.

I was worried about going straight from Pokhara to three thousand eight hundred metres in twenty minutes. The crew kept the stop short and had oxygen on board, and nobody in our group had trouble. The temple courtyard was quiet at that hour. Worth knowing that the flight can be cancelled at short notice for weather, so keep a spare day.

We had four days in Nepal and wanted my father to see Muktinath. This was the only way it fitted. Landing, walking through the one hundred and eight taps and the eternal flame, and flying back over the Annapurnas made it a full day rather than a rushed one. The office arranged everything within two days of us asking.

My mother is seventy one and could never have managed the road or the trek. The helicopter made the whole thing possible for her. We left Pokhara early, landed near the temple, did the darshan and the one hundred and eight water spouts without rushing, and were back before the afternoon wind picked up. Expensive, but for elderly parents it is the only realistic way to do this.
