The first day goes through Shivapuri National Park and the forest is dense and alive. Dipesh kept stopping to point out birds I would have walked straight past. From Chisapani onward you get Langtang and Ganesh Himal in the distance on a clear morning. Easy enough that my teenagers managed it without complaining much.

We drove up to Nagarkot early and walked down, which is the right direction to do it in. The path goes through pine and terraced fields and small villages, and Changunarayan at the bottom is genuinely old in a way that is hard to take in. The stone carvings around the temple are worth slowing down for. Barad knew the history and told it well without turning it into a lecture.

Sundarijal to Chisapani on day one is the only real climb, then it is ridge walking with the mountains ahead of you. Chisapani is a small place with simple lodges and we ate well. Coming down through Changunarayan on the last day tied it together nicely. A good option if you want the shape of a trek in three days without flying anywhere.

Day 01: Arrived in Kathmandu

When you arrive at Tribhuwan International Airport, a representative from Himalayan 360 will be there to meet you and take you to your hotel. After checking in, you can rest or, with the guide, visit Himalayan 360’s office in Thamel a part of Kathmandu in the tourist district. Here there are many shops and restaurants. The shops are colourful and full of pashminas, slippers, trekking equipment, and felt items. The restaurants serve European as well as Nepalese meals. ATMs are plentiful should you require them. In the evening, there will be a welcome dinner hosted by Himalayan 360 where you will be served authentic Nepalese cuisine. This is a great introduction to Nepalese food.

Day 02: Drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal and Hike to Chisapani.

After breakfast, we make an early morning drive to Sundarijal, a popular hangout spot in the suburb of Kathmandu. Upon arrival in Sundarijal, we start an uphill climb through a stone-paved path that leads us to the entrance of the Shivapuri National Park. The Sundarijal village is named after Hindu Goddess – Sundarimai and the temple is dedicated to the deity. The Bagmati River meanders through the village which is joined by the Shyalmati and the Bagmati Rivers.

We continue from Sundarijal to the Shivapuri National Park via a stone staircase. The hiking to Chisapani goes through the park filled with subtropical mountain woods and several species of both vascular and endemic species of flora. It takes around 5 – 6 hours to reach Chisapani. On the way, we cross Mulkharka, a small Tamang settlement which remained intact despite being so close to Kathmandu.
