Upper Mustang, a forbidden country once closed to outside visitors was opened from 1992 onwards. But remains one of the Restricted Areas of Nepal, where travelers require special permits to enter the Upper Mustang.

Best seasons for Mustang overland tour:
The best seasons for the Upper and Lower Mustang tour from April and May to June. During late spring and early summer, when days are fine with clear blue sky and less rain around lower areas. As well fewer chances of snow at Upper Mustang, where days are longer to enjoy the drive and scenic views. Much windy from afternoon till evening falls.

The next best time is from early autumn, beginning of September to early November. Most days are crystal clear with blue sky, a perfect season to visit Upper Mustang as well other Himalayas. But much cold mornings and nights the days are short due to minimum sunlight hours. The wind-chill factor adds extra freezing temperatures during the morning and late afternoon.

Overview

Upper Mustang Overland Tour on Jeep ride, takes you from the beautiful Pokhara city starting and ending point of the journey. Covering a distance of a week duration, as drive leads from Pokhara valley towards Far North West beyond the Himalayas.

The adventure continues from low warm paddy farm fields following the main road, and then on dirt mountainous tracks. Drive heads to Kaligandaki River, and in between giant Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mt. Annapurna, which forms the world’s deepest gorge. Following the river upstream towards cooler higher alpine zone reaching the apple country of Tukuche and Marpha charming villages.

The road winds up reaching Jomsom the headquarters town of Mustang district, as the drive follows up around the river valley. Reaching Kagbeni village the entry and exit point of Upper Mustang, a fascinating place to experience.

From Kagbeni onwards within the strong Buddhism culture of Tibetan heritage, the drive follows the Old Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Trail. An important caravan route for trade in between Nepal and Tibet, the border to Tibet is situated beyond Upper Mustang.

The drive follows towards Upper Mustang’s dry terrain beneath huge canyon walls and towering windblown cliffs. As the road follows on winding barren country past the nice villages of Chusang, Syangboche crosses over Nyi-La pass. The top of the high ridge offers a spectacular panorama of country landscapes with distant snow-capped peaks.

The fantastic journey follows over high ridges and within windswept terrain reaching lovely Ghami village. Exciting settlements, houses, and villages path lined with magnificent religious monuments with prayer walls and spinning wheels.

Finally, the drive enters the former forbidden walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang, where travelers will be taken back to the medieval era. In the early days known as a walled city, but at present, it is more of an old-fashioned town. But very interesting to explore the streets lined with shops, stores, and prayer monuments.

At Lo-Manthang an extra day to enjoy a leisure tour around places of interest visiting its famous old monasteries. Includes tour of former fort palace situated in the center of a town. The palace residence of the last Raja king was Jigme Palbar Bista, who lived from the age of 86 till 2017.

After an enjoyable and marvelous time and experience within the walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang. The return journey leads back on the same exciting and scenic route back to Jomsom and then toward Pokhara. Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrival in Kathmandu via respective airlines and transfer to hotel.

Upon arriving at the Kathmandu-Nepal International Airport, you will be greeted by the Himalayan 360 guide and staff, who will then transfer you to your hotel. Once you have checked into your room, you will meet with the other members in the lobby for a brief orientation.
The guide will provide you with comprehensive information about the journey to Upper Mustang, including information about the culture, religion, and anything else that will help make your holiday more enjoyable.

Day 2:
In Kathmandu tour of heritage sites, preparation for Mustang

A free day in Kathmandu with a short tour around Kathmandu world heritage sites, and a visit to old Durbar / Palace Square. Steeped with historical and religious monuments and palace with royal courtyard. Enjoy tour of old Swayambhunath one of the main landmark of the country, Buddhist monuments facing great views of Kathmandu city. Afternoon free at leisure preparation for Upper Mustang Overland Tour.

Day 3:
Drive to Pokhara 860 m and transfer to hotel - 06 hrs.

Morning taking a tourist coach or private vehicle as per group size, drive takes you to Nepal Mid-West at beautiful Pokhara. The overland journey follows Trisuli River for few hours and then heads west. During drive enjoy grand views of Manaslu and Lamjung Himal, finally, drive reaches Pokhara by the calm Phewa Lake. Where all good hotels are situated, transfer into your rooms. With time for a stroll along the lakeside.
Pokhara, the second largest city in Nepal with a beautiful setting beside the large lake of Phewa, Rupa, and Begnas. Where one can enjoy magnificent views of the Annapurna mountain range with Mt. Machhapuchare the famous fishtail peak.

Day 4:
Drive to Marpha 2,670 m - 07 hrs.

Start driving after breakfast at the hotel. From Pokhara drive on a four-wheel jeep, the best for all types of roads. The first section leads on a smooth paved road to Beni. Covering more than 90 kilometers and taking about 3 hours, Beni is a large town and headquarters of Mygdi district of Dhaulagiri zone. From Beni drive leads on the dirt tracks driving on the bank of Kali Gandaki River and huge waterfalls. After an hour reaching Tatopani then continue to drive to Marpha for an overnight halt in the comfort of a nice lodge.

Day 5:
Drive to Ghami village 3,510 m Via Kagbeni - 06 hrs.

After a pleasant overnight halt at Marpha, we continue to drive to Kagbeni via Jomsom and check special permits to enter Upper Mustang. The drive leads on dirt and rough road through several cultural villages. The road follows the bank of the Kali Gandaki River, and past typical Tibetan-style villages. As the drive head uphill to various smaller passes and then over the highest ridge crossing 3,932 m / 12, 900 feet on top Nyi-La Pass. A slow downhill drive of a few hours brings you to Ghami village for an overnight at a local guest house.
Ghami one of the major and large farming villages of Upper Mustang, with an impressive Gompa monastery. The village is surrounded by farm fields of buckwheat and barley the only high-altitude crops that grow around this dry terrain with few poplars and willow trees.

Day 6:
Drive to Lo-Manthang 3, 840 m - 04 hrs.

Today’s drive takes you to our ultimate destination of this tour reaching the walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang. The drive starts through several Mani walls and a big village called Charang. Facing panoramic snow peaks range, as drive leads up to a small pass overlooking views of the walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang.
Drive leads down to cross a stream and the short up to enter the forbidden walled kingdom of Lo-Manthang. An exciting place to take you back to the medieval time’s era. At Lo-Manthang transfer into a nice lodge or guest house of traditional Tibetan types houses and buildings. Having time for a short stroll around the streets of Lo-Manthang.

Day 7:
At Lo-Manthang free day for acclimatization and exploring.

A free day at Lo Manthang to explore Namgyal Gompa which is situated on a hilltop. The tour includes Tingkhar village, the last settlement, and the main village of Lo Manthang. If time permits visit another attraction of four stories of King Palace with panoramic Himalayan view surroundings.
The walled town village inhabits more than 150 houses with some residents of the monks and lamas/head priests. Houses are closely linked, and the palace and monasteries are located at the bottom portion of this vertical part of ‘L’ shaped houses. The school, health post, police post, and several important Chorten are located outside the walls on the north gate, with the eastern monastic part of the city.
The Mustang late Jigme Parbal Bista Raja’s / King’s palace stands as an imposing 4 storied building in the middle of the walled city.
Enjoy a visit to the important four grand monasteries Namgyal Gompa, Champa Lakhang (God House), Red Thubchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa, and its Great Entrance Hall. Tour of the historical and cultural center is one of the main attractions of Lo-Manthang.

Day 8:
Drive to Chusang 2,980 m - 05 hrs.

Morning last visit to Lo-Manthang, start driving back on the same scenic and interesting route. Driving through a vase plateau of dry land facing panoramic views of Himalayan peaks. As the drive heads ups and down past interesting villages to reach Chusang for the last overnight stop around Upper Mustang.

Day 9:
Drive to Jomsom via Muktinath - 05 hrs.

Start the morning after a good breakfast, then leave Chusang village crossing high passes and over the streams. The drive follows the Kaligandaki River downstream beneath towering canyons and windswept hills and cliffs.
Slowly the drive enters Muktinath, we stop here for lunch and visit Muktinath temple(the temple which is very famous for Buddhist and Hindu religious people) After Muktinath we drive down to Kagbeni and follow Kaligandaki till Jomsom. we spend one night in Jomsom.

Day 10:
Drive to Pokhara via Kalapani, Tatopani and Beni-06 hrs.

Today is our last day of driving on the rough country road, start the morning much earlier to reach Pokhara. After a hearty breakfast, the jeep drive heads due south towards a low warm farm country. Reaching Tatopani and then following the Kaligandaki River till Beni town, from here onwards on a good smooth highway.
An exciting and scenic drive up to Kande village and then downhill to Pokhara, completing the fabulous Upper Mustang Overland Tour.
At Pokhara transfer back to respective hotels, with time in the late afternoon to browse the streets of Lake Side.

Day 11:
At Pokhara free day to enjoy various activities.

We have reserved a free day in Pokhara as a contingency in case of delay due to broken road on route Upper Mustang. This can happen sometimes, while in Pokhara enjoy the free day with various activities to join. Like Paragliding, Bungee Jumping, and cable car to Sarankot scenic hill or taking an Ultra-Light flight.
One can enjoy boating on Phewa Lake and hiking to Peace Stupa, on top of a hill, or just relax and marvel the views of Annapurna Himalayas.

Day 12:
Drive back to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel-06 hrs.

Morning leaving the hotel in Pokhara, for an exciting overland journey to Kathmandu. Driving on the same interesting highway to Kathmandu, after a long drive reaches Kathmandu. Rest of the afternoon at leisure till dinner time.

Day 13:
International Departure homeward bound.

Last day in the country of Himalayan wonders and fascinating culture. Depart from the hotel, our guide and staff transfers you to the airport for a flight homeward bound. After a marvelous experience on Upper Mustang Overland Tour.

How many people in the group to Upper Mustang Overland Tour?

The restricted area requires special permits to enter Upper Mustang.
To run this trip requires a minimum of 2-3 people, more people is much better it will lower the cost slightly. As per season, wise expect a minimum of 2-3 or a maximum of 14 people in the group for this wonderful overland adventure.

How much for the special permit for Upper Mustang?

Since the area was allowed to visit by foreign travelers to Upper Mustang, a special permit is required. At present all foreign visitors require to pay a sum of US $ 500 per person for 10 days and US $ 50 extra per person for additional from Kagbeni to Kagbeni. Includes ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project) entry permit fee of 3,000 NPR for each person which is about US $30.

How are the accommodation and food on route to Upper Mustang?

Places like Kagbeni, Ghami, Charang, and Lo-Manthang do have nice lodges of tourist standard as well as guest houses. Serves good meals of variations from Continental, Indian, and Chinese to Nepalese popular dish of Dal Bhat (boiled rice with lentil soup and mild veg or meat curry where available).
But smaller villages with an overnight stop in the simple lodge with a very limited food menu of local standard but with homely comfort and great hospitality.

When is the best time for Upper Mustang Overland Tour?

April to May and September to October are the best time and high seasons for the trek to Upper Mustang, where days are warm with enough sunlight hours as well for clear views of snow-capped peaks and surrounding beautiful landscapes. But cold in the morning and late afternoon till night time, with chances of snowfall, sometimes can be very windy in the afternoon time.
In November can visit but most lodges will be closed for winter, as Upper Mustang people migrated to lower warm areas to Pokhara or Kathmandu.

What are the chances of charging electronic gadgets?

Every village based on the itinerary for overnight stops does have electricity with hydropower, and some places with personal solar power can charge the gadgets paying some fees at the cost per hour basis.
