Overview

Kathmandu Valley Rim Mountain Biking is an idyllic and relaxing way to experience the real rural villages of Nepal, far from the hustle and bustle of busy Kathmandu city. The Kathmandu valley rim encompasses the beautiful hills that are home to rhododendron and pine forests, as well as traditional Nepali villages that surround the valley. This Kathmandu Valley rim mountain biking tour takes you through terraced farmlands, emerald hills, pristine rhododendron and pine forests, traditional villages, sculptured temples, Gompas, and much more.

This mountain biking tour takes you to some of the famous historical cities such as Basantapur, Bhaktapur, and Patan, which are filled with artistic temples made up of stone and wooden sculptures. The hill station of Nagarkot, located at the southeast rim of the Kathmandu valley, is one of the most famous mountains and sunrise viewpoints near Kathmandu. This popular hill station offers spectacular views of majestic mountains such as Annapurna, Ganesh Himal, Langtang Himal range, Gauri Shankar Himal, and even Mount Everest.

The Kathmandu Valley Rim Mountain Biking tour starts from Sundarijal, where we begin cycling uphill through the rhododendron forest and passing small farmlands until we reach the jeep track. We then cycle uphill and take a rest at a tea house before continuing towards Chisapani, where we enter the Helambu region. From here, we cycle up to Nagarkot, which offers breathtaking views of the spectacular mountain range ranging from Gauri Shankar to Annapurna. After observing the beautiful and inspiring scenery of mountains and sunrise, we then cycle some remarkable up and downhill terrain to reach the famous Namobuddha monastery.

You will also have the opportunity to visit the golden farmland of the historical city of Panauti, where you can explore traditional Newari villages and learn about the real lifestyle of rural Nepali people and their rich culture. We then continue cycling towards Godavari hill via one of the passes to enter Kathmandu valley called Lakure bhanjyang. In Godavari, you can visit the Royal Botanical Garden. From Godavari, we cycle back to Kathmandu via Hattibaan and visit the famous Hindu temple of Dakshinkali en route.

This mountain biking tour is an exciting and challenging trip that takes you through mixed single tracks, jeep tracks, and some country roads. Since the route is quite demanding and technical, it requires off-road biking experience.

Itinerary

Day 1:
Arrived in Kathmandu

Upon your arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport, a representative from Himalayan 360 will meet you and take you to your hotel. After checking in, you can rest or take a guided tour to Himalayan 360’s office in Thamel, a popular tourist district in Kathmandu. There are numerous colorful shops filled with pashminas, slippers, trekking equipment, and felt items, as well as restaurants serving both European and Nepalese meals. ATMs are also available should you require them. In the evening, you will be treated to a welcome dinner hosted by Himalayan 360, featuring authentic Nepalese cuisine, providing a great introduction to the local food.

Day 2:
KATHMANDU TO CHISAPANI

We will begin our cycling adventure by departing from Kathmandu towards Sundarijal, where we will start cycling uphill. After cycling for an hour, we will reach a jeep track, which we will follow through small farmlands, villages, and forests as we enter the Helambu region. Upon reaching a tea house, we will take a short break before cycling for approximately 3 km to reach Chisapani. At this point, we will have left the valley, and you will be able to witness your first breathtaking views of the Himalayas, from Gaurishankhar in the east to Annapurna in the west.

Day 3:
CHISAPANI TO NAGARKOT

Today, we will follow the ridge and retrace our steps. From here, we will continue on a single track until we reach Jhule, where we will stop at a teahouse for a short break and to refuel. After that, we will descend down a technical route before ascending for 7 km to reach Nagarkot.

Day 4:
NAGARKOT TO NAMOBUDDHA

Today, we will begin our journey by riding along the ridge, passing through the Rhonni Bhanjyang, and descending towards the Tamang villages. Afterward, we will head towards the historic town of Dhulikhel before embarking on a challenging uphill climb towards Kavre Bhanjyang. Once we reach Kavre Bhanjyang, we will continue cycling uphill until we finally arrive at Namobuddha, a famous monastery in the region.

Day 5:
NAMOBUDDHA TO GODAVARI VIA LAKURI BHANJYANG

Today, we will start our day by exploring the beautiful and artistic monastery and immersing ourselves in the Buddhist culture. After that, we will move on to the historic city of Panauti. From there, we will cycle into a steep-sided valley, passing through terraced rice fields, and gradually climb upwards for 3 km towards the valley rim to reach Godavari via the pass named Lakuri Bhanyjang.

Day 6:
GODAWARI TO HATTIBAN VIA DAKSINKALI TEMPLE

Today, we will enjoy cycling around the base of the valley rim, passing through Chapagoan and exploring an ancient temple hidden in the forest. Continuing our ride, we will cycle up to a suspension bridge across a gorge and through scenic farmlands, climbing towards the rim. Once we reach the rim, we will be rewarded with stunning views and an exhilarating downhill ride towards the Bagmati River, where we will reach the Hattiban Resort.

Day 7:
HATTIBAN TO KATHMANDU

Today’s itinerary involves a thrilling single-track downhill ride through the lush jungle, leading us back to the Kathmandu Valley.

Day 8:
Final Departure

Today is the last day of our trip, and it’s time to bid farewell and return to the real world. If you have any time left, you can indulge in some souvenir shopping or sightseeing around the hotel. A representative from Himalayan 360 will collect you from the hotel and take you to the airport three hours before your departure, ensuring a smooth transition.
